The Chap’s Flimsy Fortune

For instance, like, there’s this grade school where a bunch of kids are trying to get a decent education, while wasting their parents’ hardly earned money, and the class teacher on a Saturday afternoon goes, “Okay boys and girls, listen up. There’s going to be a surprise test next week. It could be on any day between Monday and Saturday, so I suggest you prepare for it well in advance.”

The Surprising Surprise Test, Is it?

Right. So all the kids go home and immediately hit their homework like a hammer — all except for little master Deepak Dayal, who’s far more interested in watching Ironman III or IV, or whatever, instead.

When his parents inquire why he’s not buried in his books like the rest of his classmates, the young Dayal replies that it’s because there can’t be a surprise test next week. And here’s his flawless reasoning in a nutshell.

“See,” he says, “if the test doesn’t happen from Monday to Friday then it has to be on Saturday, which is hardly a surprise any longer. Therefore Saturday is ruled out completely. Now, if the test doesn’t happen from Monday to Thursday then it has to be on Friday — which isn’t a surprise either. Thus Friday’s ruled out totally too. Similarly if the test doesn’t happen from Monday to Wednesday then how can Thursday be a surprise? Neither can Wednesday or Tuesday or Monday. Get it parents? There just can’t be a test next week — not the surprise variety definitely.”

But along comes next week, exactly one wily weekend later, and the test
is held on, say surprise, surprise, Wednesday and the Deepak child has no idea what hits him because it sure isn’t his impeccable logic, which looked ironclad to him from day one. Where could he have gone so wrong? And how come, for that matter, is reality so different from reasoning? Do you suppose an answer ? I am waiting while the time ticks off , don’t I need a hack for these surprises too !
